We love ice creams and so do our dogs too. Here are some frequently asked questions about doggie ice creams. 

Human ice cream usually contains milk with lactose. Lactose, a type of sugar that is naturally found in milk are not suitable for dogs as they are unable to digest it. It may also result in tummy upsets hence feeding human ice cream isn’t the most ideal way to provide a treat. Our doggie ice cream is lactose-free. We use lactose-free whole milk and coconut milk in our ice cream or consider our sorbet option which is completely milk free.

Lactose-free milk is still real cow's milk – real dairy – but the lactose has been broken down to help the body digest it or, in some cases, the lactose in the milk is filtered out altogether. Lactose-free milk is 99.9% lactose free and contains no preservatives and retains the nutritional value of fresh milk.

Human ice cream is formulated for the palette of humans - which naturally contains ingredients suitable for humans including flavourings and sugars. Too much sugar can cause overweight issues and artificial sweeteners such as xylitol, which may be harmless to humans, are not recommended for dogs. Our doggie ice cream is specially created with a low-sugar formulation to ensure our pups can enjoy the ice cream without the harms. But of course, ice cream is still a treat with calories and should be given in moderation.

Take note that ingredients such as chocolates, raisins and grapes are definitely off limits to dogs. We have created our doggie ice cream recipes to ensure only wholesome and good ingredients for dogs are included in our doggie ice creams. Our doggie ice cream contains ingredients that are healthy and wholesome such as all natural fruits like acai berries, bananas, blue spirulina powder, and even the sprinkles are naturally coloured with vegetable and fruit colours!

Gluten is a general name for the proteins found in grains such as wheat, barley and rye. Other grains such as buckwheat, oats, rice, corn and millet are gluten free. But some dogs may be on a gluten free diet and therefore our doggie ice cream does not contain gluten. The delicious cake cubes and cookie crumbles found in the ice cream are made with gluten-free recipes which contains ingredients such as oats, rice flour, tapioca and potato. 

Can puppies and senior dogs eat ice cream?

It is best for puppies to be 3 months and older before feeding them treats. For senior dogs, good ice cream can be a delicious treat that is not hard on their teeth and gum. However treats that are high in fat can upset your older dog’s sensitive stomach and lead to unhealthy weight gain so limit ice cream to an occasional treat and you can also choose a sorbet which is lower in fat content.

If your dog has never eaten ice cream before, we recommend to start slow and observe your dog's reaction to the ice cream. Eating ice cream can be a totally new experience for your dog and he/she can take some time to explore and lick or bite the treat. Please feed with 1 teaspoon for small dogs or 1 tablespoon for larger dogs for the first time. 

Use a clean spoon to scoop and place either in the dog bowl or let the dog lick the spoon. If you would like to keep the ice cream for multiple feeds,  please do not use the same spoon which the dog has licked to scoop ice cream from the tub again. Always use a clean spoon to scoop from the tub if you are keeping the leftover.

If your dog has no issue with the ice cream, you can increase the amount gradually in line with our recommended serving guideline as stated on the packaging. And do remember ice cream is a treat and not meant to replace regular food! 

Just like our Creamier ice cream, our doggie ice cream is made fresh in Singapore using natural quality ingredients and contains no preservatives or shelf life enhancers. The expiry date is stamped at the bottom of packaging. We recommend to keep the ice cream frozen at -16 to -20 degree celsius and to consume the ice cream within 7 days from opening. If the ice cream is too hard to serve straight from the freezer, you can defrost in room temperature for about 5 min or in the fridge for about 20min before scooping. Pop the remaining ice cream back in the freezer straight away if you want to keep.
